Beautiful Classic Cars at 27 Boxes in Melville
Wipe away your drool and start your engines as you feast your eyes on beautiful classic cars. Lets see all the cars and curves captured at 27 Boxes in Melville on Fathers Day.
The event had been organized by ExploreZA from Instagram and hosted at a popular spot in Joburg. As much as I love classic cars this was my first attempt at shooting the beauties. I wasn't too sure where to start so I took my time wondering amongst the collection taking it all in.
First up were the always popular Porsche, Aston Martins and an old school big white Cadillac. Each one vied for attention with their bold curves and sex appeal. Naturally all the photographers gathered around them to capture every salacious angle. Every corner of these beautifully designed works of art offered an eyeful of excitement. Alas there weren't any other Italian beauties like Ferrari's (Some would argue the Dino qualified but I'm not so sure) and Maserati's. Better luck next time I suppose.
But they weren't alone, topless Triumph's and Mercedes bared it all with gorgeous leather interiors beckoning you in. Classy and flirty we were only allowed to look, not touch. The worn leather had softened over the years and looked inviting but you've got to respect the owners wishes.
My favorite photos were from behind with the interiors square in the frame. I played around with various angles and found square on, center frame gave these classics the prestige they deserved. None of these typical 3/4 shots you see in every car magazine. Overall I prefer the direct, powerful look.

Photographing Classic Cars
When it comes to capturing cars I had to get down. Low down. Most of these specimen's hug the ground. As usual I had my trusty Canon 5DMKII and 24-70mm f2.8 attached to my Gorillapod in case I needed stability.
The event was in the parking lot on the top of the building so light was tricky. While most of the venue was dark requiring higher exposures it was also above the surrounding skylines. This brought in massive blocks of highlights blowing out the whites. I focused on getting the cars exposure right instead leaving the image to look more like high key images. I shot mainly at f2.8 in hopes of focusing on the cars themselves and blurring the surrounding mundane parking lot structures. Overall for a first attempt it wasn't too bad and I have a few ideas for the next shoot.
