Lightroom Geotagging is Easier than You Think

Lightroom makes Geotagging quick and easy and this tutorial will have you up and running in no time at all. Why would you want to geotag your photos? Well, the ability to add extra information to your photo's like GPS data can be extremely helpful when managing large collections of photos.

Lightroom's Geotagging Controls

Lightroom has a special module just for geotagging called the Map module. This module displays a fully functional map within Lightroom. Now you can see exactly where your photos were taken. It's similar to Google Earth and other mapping software so navigating it is a breeze. This makes finding photos taken in specific areas easy and lets you group similar photos without having to search multiple catalogs.

The actual process of adding geotags is a simple drag and drop action. When you drop the images the GPS data is automatically applied to each photo. If you want to make a change to the image location simple repeat the action dragging and dropping the selected images to a new location. Lightroom will remove the old details and update the metadata with the new co-ordinates.

A reverse geocode is done once GPS data has been added. Reverse geocoding is the process of converting the GPS data into a human friendly address. It's a lot easier to recall an address than a set of GPS co-ordinates. Once your photos appear on the map a little icon with the number of associated photos shows up. Finally you can see how many photos were shot at a specific point. Clicking on the numbered icons pops up a small window letting you navigate through the pictures associated with that spot on the map.
